What are women wearing in Italy/France summer 2009?

I will be going to Italy and France this summer for a few weeks and am not sure what clothes to pack. It will be the beginning of July, so relatively warm/hot weather during the days, but cooler in the evenings. I was thinking of bringing a lot of dresses, is that ok? I need the clothes to be lightweight and also stylish. Oh and I will be doing a lot of sightseeing where short skirts/sleeveless tops are prohibited. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
