If you are milky fair, go for the auburn, reds and burgundy without a thought. If your skin tone veers towards wheatish, then dark brown, burgundy mixed with brown or black will suit you best.

Blonde, amber or honey highlights in the hair are acceptable, but Indian complexions cannot handle a completely blonde or brunette hair colour. The simple rule of thumb is the lighter the hair colour, the darker you will appear. To choose the correct shade of hair colour, try to pick one that merges with your existing or original hair colour. Now if you thought you would look like the model on the hair colour packaging, you need to think again! The same hair colour applied on two people will appear different, purely on account of the texture of your hair.

It’s important to keep the texture of your hair in mind when you choose the hair colour. Coarse hair requires a longer time for it to absorb the hair colour, so to get the desired effect you may need to keep it on for a longer period. Silky soft hair may soak in the colour faster, and requires to be kept for a shorter duration. It is always wise to keep your profession and age in mind, when you are contemplating a hair colour job. You wouldn’t want to shock the boss with ruby red hair, would you? If you are relying on hair colour to cover the salt in your hair, then choose a colour closest to your original hair colour. No one’s going to believe you have copper or amber hair at 48.

Choose a professional for the job, it’s not worth pinching pennies! Hurriedly done, DIY hair colour jobs done at home can prove disastrous, as can hair colour jobs done by a novice at a sub-standard salon.
